Beyond the co-op mode the game also features a classic mode, complete with black/green wire-frame graphics that was far more of a nostalgia rush than I had anticipated and was the mode I ended up spending up more time than I had anticipated when I first started it up. However if you decide to play this game with friends I strongly suggest upping the difficulty setting as four, even moderately skilled players can breeze through each level with ease. That means you and up to three friends can tackle the game’s missions together and have a blast… blasting your foes. Thankfully the game has a few tricks up its sleeve to stay fresh for a little while longer.įor one the entire game is playable in full, four-player co-op. ![]() That being said the campaign, even at their shortest setting are a bit overlong and the fairly repetitive gameplay can start to wear thin after a few stages. It’s pretty fun, especially once you get a handle on the game’s controls and can really lay waste to your foes with pinpoint attacks and reckless abandon. However despite these varied objectives the core gameplay never really changes, from level to level you will be generally tasked with clearing the field of enemy tanks and vehicles and thus winning the day. The missions leading up to the shield generators and the assault on the volcano base have varied objections from protecting a base of your own, destroying enemy convoys, clearing minefields and capturing their evil (you can tell because they are red) bases. The main point of the game is to make your way to the enemy’s shield installations, heavily fortified bases that protect their main base located within a deadly volcano. ![]() And you know what? It’s a lot of fun!Īt the outset of every campaign, once you’ve chosen your settings for the procedurally generated quest, you will be able to move from stage to stage doing battle with your opponents. The game opens with a bit of exposition as to the game’s setting – essentially aliens… or robots… or alien robots have taken over the world with their army of tanks and drones and it’s up to you, one of the last tank pilots on Earth to save humanity! Obviously the story in Battlezone: Gold Edition is not the point of the game, were here to blow tanks to smithereens and that’s exactly what this is all about, just mindlessly blowing up your enemies. Actually I had completely forgotten about the Battlezone IP but was quickly remember inundated with memories of playing the original via a freeware website during our computer class in grade school (who needs to learn how to use Excel right?) and those exact feelings are still present in this modern take on the game that manages to keep this fun, mindless intact while bringing in just enough modern elements to keep things fresh. Have you ever played a game that is so mindless yet so fun at the same time? Well that’s exactly the feeling I got when I played Battlezone: Gold Edition, it’s a fun, frenetic game that doesn’t take itself seriously and that’s exactly what it does so well.
